Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast for Walking, Month by Month
The Amalfi Coast month by month for walkers: heat on the paths, daylight, ferry and hotel seasons, festivals, and why May and October are the months to book.

Quick links
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast for walking is May or October. Both are warm enough to swim but rarely hot on the paths: at the Capri weather station, an average May has 1.6 days of 30 °C or more and October 0.6, against 25.8 in August.
Most visitors still come in July and August, when the paths are in full sun from mid-morning. Plan the year around the walking, not the beach, and spring and autumn beat summer on everything but sea temperature.
The essentials:
Best months: May and October, with October the best single month
Walking season: April to June and September to November
Hottest: July and August, with highs of 32 °C (90 °F) on the coast
Wettest: October to December, 85 to 96 mm of rain a month
Busiest: August, and the weeks around Easter, 1 May and 2 June
Cheapest and quietest: November to March, when most hotels are closed
Walking Seasons on the Amalfi Coast
The year splits into four walking seasons, each with its own light, heat and crowds.
Flowers in the Ravello gardens and on the terraces, highs of 20 to 24 °C, and the ferries running again from 1 April.
Fifteen hours of daylight and a sea of about 23 °C. Walk early, as 11 days in an average June reach 30 °C.
The hottest and busiest months, with highs of 32 °C. Walk at dawn or in the shaded valleys, and swim in the afternoon.
Warm sea, softer light and the new peak months for hotel stays. The rain returns in October, and the ferries stop in early November.
Winter, from December to March, falls outside our walking weeks. It is the emptiest time on the coast, with short days, the most rain and most hotels closed.
The Amalfi Coast Month by Month
Temperatures and rain below are 1991 to 2020 averages from the Capri weather station, 160 m above the sea. The villages higher up, such as Ravello at 350 m and Agerola at about 630 m, run cooler.
January to March
Days are short, with 9 hours 34 minutes of light in mid-January, and highs of 14 to 17 °C. Most hotels in Positano and Amalfi close from late November to mid-March, and only the Salerno to Amalfi ferry runs along the coast.
The paths are empty and green after the winter rain, but wet stone steps are slippery, and January has eight rainy days. Easter brings the first visitors; in 2027 it falls on 28 March, the day the clocks go forward.

April
April is when the coast reopens. NLG's ferries start on 1 April, Capri's €5 landing tax applies again, and highs reach about 20 °C, with 13 hours of daylight by mid-month.
It is the month of flowers and green terraces, and our walking weeks start in April. Expect a few showers, on 5.5 days on average, and busy towns over Easter and the 25 April holiday. On days with an orange or red weather alert, keep off the exposed paths such as the Path of the Gods.

May
May is the best spring month for the Path of the Gods. Highs are about 24 °C, rain falls on fewer than four days, and the sun sets after 20:00, so a full day's walk fits easily.
The sea is still cool at about 19 °C, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Book early for the long weekends around 1 May and 2 June, Italy's Labour Day and Republic Day.

June
June has the longest days, 15 hours of light, and a sea warm enough for a swim at about 23 °C. It is also when the heat arrives: an average June has 11 days of 30 °C or more.
On exposed paths such as the Path of the Gods, start walking by 8 am and finish before the midday sun. On 27 June Amalfi holds the summer feast of Sant'Andrea, for the storm that saved the town from the pirate Barbarossa in 1544.

July and August
These are the hottest months, with highs of 32 °C (90 °F) and more than 22 days a month at 30 °C or above. The paths are in full sun from mid-morning, and in August 2026 a rescue helicopter flew walkers off the Path of the Gods.
Walk at dawn, or choose the Valle delle Ferriere, which the regional park describes as cool and humid even in high summer. The Ravello Festival opens in early July, and Positano's Festa dell'Assunta ends with fireworks over the bay on 15 August.

September
September is warm, with highs of about 28 °C and the sea at its summer best, around 25 °C. The local tourism district now counts September and October as the peak months for hotel stays, many of them by American visitors.
The heat lasts: an average September still has almost 10 days of 30 °C or more, so keep the early starts. The rain returns, on 5.5 days, and the Ravello Festival closes in early September.

October
October is the best single month for walking. Highs are about 24 °C (75 °F), the sea is still around 22 °C, and only 0.6 days reach 30 °C, so the paths are comfortable all day.
It is also wetter, with 88 mm of rain on about seven days and two or three heavy downpours. Days shorten fast: the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, and sunset moves from about 18:00 to about 17:00.

November and December
November is the wettest month, with 96 mm of rain on nine days, but highs are still about 18 °C and the paths are quiet. NLG's ferries stop on 3 November, and the last departures of our 11-day Amalfi to Sorrento week run in November.
On 30 November Amalfi holds its main feast of Sant'Andrea, with bells at 5 am and the statue carried at a run up the cathedral steps. After mid-November many restaurants in Positano close until spring.

September or October for Walking?
Most guides to the Amalfi Coast pick September, for the warmer sea. For walking, October is the better month: an average September still has almost 10 days of 30 °C or more, and October has 0.6.

September has the warmer sea, about 25 °C against 22 °C, and less rain, 58 mm against 88 mm. October has quieter paths by the second half of the month, but the season winds down fast at the end of October: the clocks go back on the 25th, Positano Jet stops on the 31st and NLG on 3 November.
For both walking and swimming, aim for the last week of September or the first two weeks of October.
Crowds, Cruise Ships and Prices
The busiest days are Easter week, the long weekends around 1 May and 2 June, and Ferragosto on 15 August. In 2026, Salerno's cruise terminal expected 183 ship calls and up to 400,000 passengers, many of them on day trips along the coast.

Hotel prices follow the season. Positano charges its tourist tax from 1 April to 31 October, its own definition of the season, and May and June cost less than July and August. Book early for September and October, now the peak months for hotel stays.
Drivers face odd and even number plates on the SS163 from 10:00 to 18:00, every day in August and September 2026 and at weekends in October.
Heat, Daylight and Start Times on the Paths
Most of the famous paths face south over the sea with little shade. The Path of the Gods runs 5.3 km from Bomerano to Nocelle with long stretches in full sun, and its only water points are at Bomerano, Colle La Serra and Nocelle.

From June to September, start by 8 am, carry at least 1.5 litres of water each and plan to finish by early afternoon. In spring and autumn you can start later, but check the sunset time before you set off: it is 20:13 in mid-May and 16:44 in mid-November.
Fire risk is high in the summer months. In 2026 Campania declared its forest-fire danger period from 15 June, later extended to 15 October, so never light a fire or a stove in the woods.
What Opens and Closes When
The season on the coast runs from Easter to the end of October. Positano charges its tourist tax only from 1 April to 31 October, and most hotels in Positano and Amalfi close from late November to mid-March.
NLG's ferries run from 1 April to 3 November 2026 and Positano Jet's until 31 October. Travelmar keeps the Salerno to Amalfi route all year, while its Positano boats run from April to October, according to the local CAI section.

Sights change too. Via Krupp on Capri reopened on 2 April 2026 after winter works, and the Monte Solaro chairlift closes for about 20 days in January and February. Check opening days before you plan a walk around a sight, as winter hours change from year to year.
The SITA buses run all year, on a new winter timetable from 2 November.
Festivals That Fill the Towns
Feast days bring crowds to the towns, so plan walks around them. Amalfi's feast of Sant'Andrea falls on 27 June and 30 November, and Ravello honours San Pantaleone on 27 July with a procession and fireworks.
Summer has the most events. The Ravello Festival ran from 4 July to 5 September in 2026, and the 2027 edition opens on 4 July with Beethoven's Fidelio. Amalfi and Atrani hold the Byzantine New Year from 31 August to 2 September, one of the free things to do on the Amalfi Coast at the end of summer.

The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics moves between Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice. Amalfi last hosted it in May 2025, and the 2026 race was in Pisa, so book rooms early in a regatta year if it is Amalfi's turn.
